The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has appointed Aileen Thompson as the organisation’s new Director of Communications.
Aileen will lead the Association’s communications department and will be responsible for the ABPI’s engagement with all external stakeholders – government, NHS, media, patient groups and the wider healthcare community.
Aileen began her career working for a range of PR agencies including Burson-Marsteller and Weber Shandwick where her clients included leading pharmaceutical and health organisations.
Most recently, Aileen worked for Innovate UK as interim Director of Communications on their executive team leading the communications function. Her previous roles include those of Corporate Communications Director at Vodafone UK, Director of Consumer, Brand and Enterprise Media Relations at Vodafone Group, and Director of Corporate Communications at Kellogg’s Europe.
Aileen will report directly to ABPI Chief Executive, Stephen Whitehead and will advise the Board of Management and Senior Leadership Team on communication issues. She will play a pivotal role in highlighting the value the pharmaceutical industry brings to the UK, and will ensure that the industry continues to work with all stakeholders to ensure that patients across the UK have access to the medicines they need.
ABPI Chief Executive Stephen Whitehead said: “I am delighted by Aileen’s appointment at what is a critical juncture for our industry. Aileen’s vast communications and campaigning experience and her track record of successfully tackling difficult and sensitive issues across a range of industries will be hugely beneficial to the ABPI at a time when there are many issues and challenges on the table for our industry and I very much look forward to working with her.”
